Up until about 12 hours ago, I really had no idea why the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale was such a big deal. Like oh my STARS was my Instagram feed filled with yellow #NSALE advertisements, and just like I’ve been every other year at this most annoying time of the year, I was over it by 10 am.
See, here’s the thing: I thought that the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale was just like any other sale a department store might do ever. Last season’s clothes at an okay markdown. Finally, I was clued in {after 5.5 years of blogging, I know} as to what the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale actually is.
Nordstrom doesn’t mark down their past season spring and summer clothing for the sale, they markdown their new Fall clothing. That’s right, cozy knits, chic turtlenecks, and all the classic lightweight wool coats you could want in the world. None of that sundress and swimwear business {except there actually are a few in an autumnal palette}. The items on NSALE aren’t super trendy or seasonal, but rather classic pieces you can wear for more than one season and for years to come. That’s not to say that there isn’t a few fun pieces on the sale. What’s life without a little diversity?
I’ve been buying my fall wardrobe at full price for almost 20 years of my life. Brb while I take a moment to morn the loss of all the dollars I didn’t need to be spending. Or all the extra clothes I could’ve bought for the same amount of money.
Now that we’ve established that my back to school wardrobe this year is going to be more stylish than ever, I’ve rounded up 40 fall basics currently on the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale under $100. Pair them together, pair them with a statement piece, regardless, you’ll be glad you have them come September. Many of the items I have on this list are under $50, and almost all of them come in several colors, not just the one pictured!

SWEATERS
I’m starting with sweaters because all of these look so. freaking. cozy. and even though I’m grateful we’re not in the 0 degree days of January, I kind of want to be wrapped up in a big cozy sweater right now in the cool autumn air.
TOPS
This basic chic turtleneck comes in multiple colors, and is on sale for just $15. I’m not saying that all four colors are currently in my cart right now, I’m just saying that if they were, it would be an investment in the well-being of my wardrobe because ahem, matches everything.
DENIM
If I knew that I could be buying current season, staple, 7 For All Mankind denim for $100 off I would’ve been shopping this sale a longgggg time ago.
TROUSERS
Wear to work must-haves at won’t take all the money you make at work prices.
DRESSES + SKIRTS
because what we’re all missing in our wardrobes is another LBD. Yes, even the blue dress comes in black and I think I might need it in both colors.
MISCELLANEOUS
A windbreaker, a jumpsuit, and a pair of leggings. How interesting. For real though, I adore all of these items and would call them fall basics, so here they are.
–Windbreaker: because um hello? Fall weather is unpredictable if you’re living in the Midwest or Northeast. One day it’s 70 degrees and sunny and the next you’re in the middle of a downpour.
-Jumpsuit: Fall gets cold. When you’re not feeling a dress, a good jumpsuit is an elegant alternative and keeps your legs warm.
-Everyone should have at least one pair of solid black leggings that aren’t plain. A little detail gives a lot of interest.
Honestly, why did no one fill me in on how wonderful the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale truly is earlier? *cue mob of annoyed style bloggers chasing me down the street because they’re been trying to for years. Sorry y’all. I’m here now.*
